As soon as Sir Philip was through the gates, he let Alcides stretch into a gallop. He had not liked leaving Lady Lewisham and Miss Trew, just as he had not liked leaving Harry. He generally trusted his judgement, and he had not liked Count Maldolo. There had been no warmth in his offer of hospitality, and he had felt the underlying resentment at his presence that had bristled through the man.
That he had some interest in Lady Lewisham, he had no doubt â that she was unaware of it â he also had no doubt. The feeling that he had left a lamb to the slaughter niggled at him and only the knowledge that Miss Trew would watch over her had enabled him to take his leave. He had done so with alacrity as the desire to ruffle the countâs feathers had been very tempting. In all truth, he would have liked to have pushed him up against the wall and threatened him with all manner of unpleasant things if he dared to so much as breathe too close to Lady Lewisham.
He groaned. He was in trouble. When she had been happily moving through the flowers in the meadow, humming a sweet melody, utterly unconscious of her grace and beauty, he had felt himself drawn to her like a moth to a flame. When she had turned so suddenly and their hands had met, skin on skin, that flame had burned in her eyes, sending a dry heat through him, igniting a desire that whispered to him to lay her down among the daisies and sip her nectar.
Thank heaven for Miss Trew! One calmly uttered, commonplace phrase had been more effective than a douche of cold water. Much more worrying, though, was the wave of fierce protectiveness that had possessed him as he had watched her return slowly to herself. The urge to sweep her up into his arms and carry her somewhere, anywhere he knew she would be safe from anyone who might try to corrupt the innocence that he had felt within her, even as he had felt her desire burst into life at that brief touch. Widow or not, she was that rare thing, an innocent temptress. Only a snake would try to take advantage of that. Only marriage would do for Sophie, Lady Lewisham, but marriage was something neither of them wished for.
Harry, he must concentrate on Harry. He would make sure that Lady Treleven would know the happiness of being reunited with a son whom she loved unconditionally, even as his own mother had loved him.
